MP for North East Hertfordshire, Sir Oliver Heald, is welcoming the latest Hertfordshire Waste Partnership (HWP) annual report. It takes a look at the range of services provided by HWP’s 11 Partner Authorities, with an emphasis on how such services are being developed in response to legislative changes, market challenges, and the wider fiscal environment.
The report shows that almost half of the household waste arising in Hertfordshire is now being recycled, with the HWP’s recycling rate increasing to 49.4% by March 2015. This includes re-use, recycling, and composting. Furthermore, once the HWP’s use waste to produce energy is taken into account, overall landfill diversion increased to 73.6% during 2014/15. This means that almost three-quarters of the household waste arising in Hertfordshire is now diverted from landfill.

Commenting, Sir Oliver said, I am happy to see that so much of Hertfordshire’s waste is avoiding landfill. Landfill sites are environmentally damaging and a blight on communities local to them. The more waste that can be re-used, recycled, or used for energy, the better. I welcome Hertfordshire’s recent progress in this area, and I encourage the county’s residents to do even more to reduce the waste they send to landfill.”
