Sir Oliver Heald, MP for North East Hertfordshire has welcomed the result of yesterday’s Scottish Referendum which showed 55.3 % of voters voting in favour of keeping Scotland a part of the United Kingdom. There was a record breaking 84.6% voting turnout to decide on an issue which has stirred many in Scotland and the United Kingdom and has generated fierce debate over the previous weeks.
Commenting Sir Oliver said “I am delighted to hear this morning that a decisive majority has voted in favour of maintaining the Union. Scotland and England have enjoyed a successful marriage for many centuries and contributed a huge amount to the World. The UK is Mother of all Parliaments. The important partnership between the two countries should be never understated on any level.
“As David Cameron said, it is now time to move forward with more devolution for Scotland and England. I worked on proposals for English Votes for English Laws at Westminster, which would give the sole right to English Constituency MPs to vote on England only laws. Government plans will be announced which will allow for greater devolution to Scotland and provide a fair deal for England and the other nations of the Union. I will be closely involved in the coming debates. The UK is now recovering from the deep recession under the Government's plan and this result creates much needed stability for the UK."
