North East Herts MP Oliver Heald is encouraging the Government to recognise the bravery and dedication of members of the armed forces serving in Afghanistan and Iraq by awarding medals to those who have been killed or wounded in enemy action.
Throughout the twentieth century, wounded servicemen were awarded individual badges for each injury received and in the First World War the families of the bereaved were issued with a bronze plaque inscribed with the victim’s name.
Commenting, Oliver Heald said, “Many in our military have pointed out that it is important for the public to get behind our forces who are serving in Afghanistan and Iraq and recognise the sacrifices they are making. I do believe that the award of a medal for the killed and wounded would be one way of achieving this. I have therefore signed Early Day Motion 95, which reflects this campaign to persuade the Government to recognise the dead and injured servicemen and women with a special medal.”
