MP sets out views on House of Lords Reform
North East Herts MP, Oliver Heald, is one of the signatories to an Alternative Report on House of Lords reform published today. For the past few months, Oliver has been a member of the Draft House of Lords Reform Bill Committee, comprising Lords and MPs. The task of the Committee was to scrutinise the Government’s draft Bill on House of Lords Reform. The Committee’s report has also been published today, but Oliver and 11 other members of the Committee felt they had significant misgivings about the draft Bill and have produced their own report. The link to the Alternative Report is www.houseoflordsreform.com.
In addition, Oliver, as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Society of Conservative Lawyers has today published a pamphlet, “An Elected Second Chamber – Building a Better House?” looking specifically at how members of a reformed House should be elected. The Government’s Bill referred only to direct elections based on regional areas. Oliver argues that this system is flawed and would lead to many significant problems. Oliver’s pamphlet is at www.conservativelawyers.com
