North East Herts MP Oliver Heald is backing the Daylight Saving Bill which will put the clock forward an hour to provide an extra hour of daylight in the afternoon. The Bill, which is being presented by Conservative MP Rebecca Harris, has a real head of steam, with teachers and sports coaches welcoming it as a way of encouraging out of school clubs and sports training.
Although the last time this came up there was opposition, particularly in Scotland, this time Oliver has received a strong postbag in favour.
Commenting, Oliver Heald said, “I have received more than fifty letters in favour of the Daylight Saving Bill and many teachers and sports enthusiasts locally have said that it will help with training and out of school clubs. I am therefore backing the Bill this Friday.”
NOTE
There are sixty four Bills queuing up for debate on Friday 20 January 2012, the last opportunity this Session for a Bill brought forward by a Backbencher to make it through to the Statute Book.
Rebecca Harris’s Daylight Saving Bill is listed number one for debate and therefore has a good chance of becoming law. The second Bill listed is the Live Music Bill, which tidies up problems created by Labour’s 2003 Licensing Act, by allowing live unamplified music to be played in clubs and pubs without a licence. There will still be a need for a licence with large venues. This Bill is also likely to become law.
The remaining Bills are much less likely to make it through as there will be very little time, if any, for them to be debated.
