North East Herts MP Oliver Heald was Guest of Honour at Therfield School on Monday for the BT Internet Ranger event. This campaign is dedicated to young people helping to bridge the “digital divide” by using their skills to teach the older generation about going online.
Oliver was shown the expert skills of the youngsters, and how they were teaching senior people in the village (as well as their mums and grandmothers!) how to use the Internet.
Amongst those attending were Mr and Mrs Don Kingsley, Mrs Jean Hayes, Mrs Sue Hutchinson and others.
Commenting, Oliver Heald said, “This was an extremely good demonstration of how the young can teach the old a thing or two. I know that Don Kingsley was particularly pleased to find The Farmers’ Weekly online and Sue Hutchinson was able to revisit an elephant sanctuary in Sri Lanka via the Internet, rekindling the memories of her visit there some years ago. Local poet Jean Hayes was able to look at poetry online, too.
“This was very interesting and a definite “feather in BT’s cap”.
