North East Herts MP, Oliver Heald, has been sworn in as Solicitor General of Great Britain by the Lord Chief Justice at a ceremony at the Royal Courts of Justice.
Her Majesty's Solicitor General is an ancient office dating back to 1461. It is a Government post traditionally held by an MP who is also a barrister. Oliver was appointed as Queen’s Counsel at the same ceremony and is now able to add the letters QC after his name.
Commenting, Oliver Heald said “It is an honour and a privilege to hold this ancient post. For a barrister who goes into politics, it is a very special role. It is also unusual in providing an overview of Government as I shall be giving legal advice to all Departments. It will be challenging, but very rewarding. Of course, representing North East Herts remains my first priority. ”
