North East Herts MP Oliver Heald has continued his long-standing campaign for new lifts at Letchworth Railway Station, by pressing Chief Executive David Higgins at Network Rail for a date by which the lifts will be installed.
Mr Higgins has now written to Oliver, saying that the current project programme aims to install the new lifts by February 2014. The scheme has funding from the Department of Transport to install two new lifts at the Station close to the railway bridge. The support lift shafts will be constructed “at a discreet location to the side of the existing footbridge.”
Commenting, Oliver Heald said, “I have been pressing for action on the lifts for many years and was told that Network Rail were given funding by the Government for two new lifts. It has proved a slow process, but I am delighted to now have the news that the lifts will be installed by February 2014. Many disabled constituents and mothers with buggies and heavy shopping contacted me about this issue on a very regular basis and it is vital that we have successful outcome.”
