MP for North East Hertfordshire, Sir Oliver Heald, is encouraging all local A-level students to take part in the Political Studies Association Schools’ Short Video Competition, which is now in its sixth year.
A highlight of the PSA’s calendar of activities to engage young people in politics, the annual short film competition, sponsored by YouGov, is open to post-16 students who will be studying during the academic year 2016-17.
This year’s competition asks students to explore the question: "Do you have to be Superman/Superwoman to be US President?”. Groups of students are invited to submit short videos on this subject, examining what attributes are necessary to be a political leader, and the advantages and disadvantages of presidential systems.
Shortlisted groups will be invited to The Speaker’s House in the Palace of Westminster to discuss the ideas raised in their video with a panel of politicians, journalists, and academics, with the winners receiving their award at the PSA’s Annual Awards Ceremony in Westminster.
The deadline for schools is October 21st. Full competition details for 2016, and how to enter, can be found at www.psa.ac.uk
Commenting, Sir Oliver said, “Engaging young people in politics is very important, and this scheme presents A-Level students with an excellent opportunity to explore political issues and express their ideas. I encourage all A-level students in North East Herts to take part in this exciting competition.”
