Today the EU (Referendum) Bill received its third reading in the House of Commons despite Labour using parliamentary tactics to try to “talk it out”. This means that, for the first time in more than a generation, the democratically elected House of Commons has progressed a Bill to third reading to legislate for an EU referendum.
This would not have been possible but for the discipline and determination of Conservative MPs. It is not easy to attend on repeated Fridays and then catch up on constituency work. The Bill's sponsor James Wharton MP, the members of the committee and the Party as a whole could not have done more.
Now it is up to the House of Lords to follow the democratic lead given by the House of Commons.
