North East Herts MP Oliver Heald has again shown his support for Equitable Life policyholders, who have yet to see any sign of compensation from the Government. Members of the Hertfordshire Equitable Life Action Group met Oliver at the House of Commons last Tuesday, the day before a debate seeking to press the Government to accept the compensation recommendations of the Parliamentary Ombudsman.
Government delays in awarding fair compensation have meant that 30,000 people have already died without receiving anything. Oliver told the Government to “get on with” awarding compensation and attacked this scandal as a “policy disaster”.
Later Oliver commented, “A large number of my constituents were relying on Equitable Life investments for their pensions. They have been left in an intolerable situation by this Government. The Parliamentary Ombudsman made clear and forceful recommendations, yet the Government has dragged its heels.
“Their lack of action is callous and sends all the wrong signals on the importance of saving for later life.”
