North East Hertfordshire MP Oliver Heald joined National Citizenship Service volunteers David and Daniel English, pupils at Freman College, on Saturday morning at Hormead School to see the work that a group of teenagers has been doing to create a garden area.
15 youngsters were brought together by the NCS and gave up several weekends to clear an overgrown area in the school playground. They moved quantities of earth, levelled the surface, pegged down weed-proof lining and spread enormous amounts of gravel. They have now assembled and installed wooden planters which the children will plant with flowers and vegetables.
Oliver was joined by Hormead School Headmaster Andrew Reade who explained that one of his staff is the mother of a volunteer and she put forward the suggestion of the garden project at the school. The Headmaster has been very impressed by the commitment of the youngsters and the work they have done. The youngsters come from different schools and were brought together for the project. They have made lasting friendships as a result.
Commenting, Oliver said "The National Citizenship Service is a fairly new scheme which offers youngsters the chance to give their time and energy for the benefit of the community. The project at Hormead School is an excellent example and I congratulate all those involved."
