Sir Oliver Heald, MP for North East Hertfordshire, has praised the two-week firearms amnesty held by the Hertfordshire Constabulary in which about 200 weapons were handed in to the Police for disposal.
The amnesty ran from the 10th-21st of November as part of a nationwide scheme. It was set up to encourage those with unlicensed weapons in their possession to surrender them to the authorities.
Commenting, Sir Oliver said, “We are very lucky in Hertfordshire with our low rate of gun crime. However, one gun in the wrong hands is one too many, and I am glad that this amnesty has been such a success. This has made our streets even safer. I urge anyone who is concerned by a firearm in their possession to call 101 to speak to a firearms licensing officer.”
