Oliver Heald’s popular Seven a Side Cricket Tournament on Royston Heath took place on Bank Holiday Sunday as usual with last year’s winners Babraham Cricket Club defending their title. Six teams competed, including Thriplow Cricket Club, Market One, The Technology Partnership, Ramblers Cricket Club (a team led by Oliver’s son William) and hosts Royston Town Cricket Club, whose Dominic Adams organized the Tournament.
The two teams who reached the final were Market One and Babraham, but because of heavy cloud cover and loss of light, the Captains decided to share the trophy which will be displayed first at Market One in Royston.
Man of the Tournament was Amjad Afridi of the Market One Team, who scored three half centuries and led on bonus points.
During the day a collection was made and a raffle held for the Royston Branch of the Royal British Legion and also present on the day were Town Mayor Martin Beaver, Cllr Fiona Hill and other local personalities. Oliver watched the whole Tournament.
Commenting, Oliver Heald said, “I am glad the Tournament was such a success and we were a bit unlucky with the light. Two worthy teams shared the prize. It was great that Babraham was able to defend their title and Market One certainly showed how to knock up the runs.
“I was enormously grateful to Dominic Adams for all the hard work he did in organizing and umpiring the match.”
