Following discussions about the proposed development at Ivy Farm, it has come to the attention of North East Hertfordshire MP Oliver Heald that the Conservators of Therfield Heath intend to remove all the trees along the edge of Baldock Road between the entrance to Ivy Farm and Therfield Road. Oliver was surprised by this news and immediately wrote to the Conservators, asking for the reasons. Paul Palmer, Clerk to the Conservators replied, “Justification for the works are:
- part of a continuing programme of returning the Heath to its former status as an area of open chalk grassland
- to enable effective pest control to be undertaken. The presence of tree roots provides a haven for rabbits and prevents their burrows from being collapsed
- that when development proposals for Ivy Farm are considered, if it is suggested that screening is necessary, the developers should be required to provide such measures within the boundary of their own site, rather than relying on other to mitigate results of their actions and
- to enable the contribution of an impenetrable hedge to be planted, as exists on the other side of the Therfield Road. The canopy of the existing trees would prevent the siting/growth of such a hedge. The hedge is required to enhance separation of horses and vehicular traffic and thus improve safety.”
Commenting, Oliver Heald said, This will certainly be a major change to the view from the Heath and I hope the Conservators will give a good notice period to the people in Royston, so that the works do not come as a shock and residents have the opportunity to consider the implications of this.”
