MP for North-East Hertfordshire, Sir Oliver Heald, is urging everyone in his constituency to prepare for winter and ensure that they are taking advantage of free help and support with their energy bills. There are a number of things that can be done to help people keep their bills down.
The first of these is insulation, as it improves the energy efficiency of a home and helps keep it warm. British Gas is currently offering free loft and cavity wall insulation, which is available to 90% of the homes that need it. Loft insulation can save £145 per year, and cavity wall insulation can save £150 per year.
The second is to ensure that energy companies are providing the best deal. There are numerous fixed-rate tariffs that can help keep costs down.
Constituents may be entitled to extra Government help. Last year, around 550,000 British Gas customers alone received the Warm Home Discount – a one-off discount of £135, which will rise to £140 this year.
Finally, organisations like the British Gas Energy Trust can offer advice for people who are suffering with their household bills. The Trust has helped over 120,000 people with grants and debt advice.
Commenting, Sir Oliver said, “As winter gets closer, and temperatures start to drop, it is very important to ensure that everyone can keep their homes warm at a reasonable price. There are a number of ways of doing this, and I urge everyone in North-East Hertfordshire to look into what could help them and their families. I advise people to contact their energy supplier to find out what support is on offer.”
