Sir Oliver Heald MP has welcomed the forthcoming introduction of more than 12,600 streetlights in Hertfordshire’s A-Roads, with work starting on the 12th of January in North Hertfordshire, and on the 9th of February in East Hertfordshire. LED lights considerably reduce maintenance costs, use much less energy than conventional lights, improve visibility, and reduce light pollution.
The new lighting system will be controlled from a wireless Central Management System (CMS), allowing lights to be monitored from a central point. This reduces inspection costs and makes it easier to spot and repair faults. The new CMS system will also allow the intensity of the lights to be varied, to make the streetlights more responsive to natural lighting conditions, allowing for further savings. The project will cost 6.5 million, but save £660,000 every year after installation.
Commenting, Sir Oliver said, “I am very happy to see Hertfordshire’s street-lighting at the forefront of technology. This new system will be much cheaper and more effective than what we currently have, saving the taxpayers of Hertfordshire a considerable sum of money.”
